Cancer Screening: Partnering for Early Detection
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. Because many cancers show no early symptoms, routine screening is critical for early detection and better outcomes.
You can view VNS Health and SelectHealth members’ Gaps in Care—such as colorectal and breast cancer screenings—directly in the provider portal. This helps you quickly identify patients who are due for preventative services and support timely follow-up.
Screening Guidelines:
• Breast Cancer: For women 40 and older, mammogram every 2 years, or they may continue annual screening if they remain in good health and have a life expectancy of 10+ years
• Colorectal Cancer: Colonoscopy every 10 years, annual FIT/FOBT, or stool DNA test every 3 years
• Cervical Cancer: Preferred: HPV DNA test every 5 years; alternatives: Pap + HPV co-test every 5 years or Pap alone every 3 years. Discontinue at 65 if prior results are consistently negative.
Practice Tips:
• Annual FIT testing is as effective as colonoscopy every 10 years for average-risk patients
• Documentation supports quality measures (e.g., HEDIS) and reimbursement
• Women living with HIV have lower breast cancer survival rates—timely screening is critical
